Vegan Corn Dogs…. kids big and small love them!

I wanted to make some fun food for kids and I’ve never even eaten, let alone made a corn dog in my life!

The occasional deep fry can be kinda fun!
Vegan Corn Dogs
My great nephew Graham, what a cutie. I love that he showed up ready to work, with his hair brushed just right and a very cool suit jacket to show he meant business!

My friend Mel, lent me her deep fryer and I decided to ask my nieces kids over for some serious deep-fried food creation. I wanted some honest feedback and you know a four-year-old and two and a half -year-old twins are going to give you the real goods – an honest thumbs up or down. I had such a blast with these little food testers!

We made three dishes, corn dogs, French fries and deep-fried tempura banana! Here is the corn dog recipe.

Ok let’s get making some yummy corn dogs vegan style!

The finished product, ready to eat. Oh my, dinner on a stick!

Vegan Corn Dogs are pretty tasty, if I do say so myself.

You will need a deep fryer or a deep pot that you can use as a deep fryer. Choose a good quality oil that can take high temperatures, I used Sunflower oil. I decided to make some with veggie dogs (or tofu dogs) and some with vegan sausages, I used the Fieldhouse Apple Sage Sausages for the adults.

These babies are fun, you can prep most of it ahead of time. Think party or get together.

Hey, bring in some food testers, like I did. I’m sure you won’t have any difficulty finding them. Just call out your front door, “corn dogs coming up, first come first serve”. That should do the trick and then you will know for sure they are good.

Experiment with this concept. You could do really small corn dogs, just bit size or you could put a pinch of minced hot peppers in the batter….or what about….

Here’s what else you will need for your Vegan Corn Dogs:

  • 1-2 vegan hot dogs of your choice for each person. I also used Field Roast (vegan) Sausages for the adults, the kids liked these too!

I told you it wasn’t going to look that pretty!

Cutting up some vegan cheese slices to go into the dogs, before we dip them in the batter
  • 1 wooden skewer for each corn dog (cut to fit easily inside your deep fryer)
  • Toothpicks – if you are going to add cheese in the middle, toothpicks help hold it all together for dipping in the batter and deep frying
  • Vegan cheese – Daiya and Fieldhouse brands both have cheese slices that work well
  • Batter (recipe below)
  • Oil and something to deep fry the corn dogs in, the oil has to be deep enough to completely cover the corn dogs easily
  • Dipping sauces – optional

When I say sizzle up, I mean like this. This way you will get the crispiest outside and very little grease inside.
    Vegan Corn Dogs
Carefully insert the battered veggie dog into the hot oil, it should sizzle up

Just cook 2-4 at a time, whatever you can fit in easily, be patient.

To make the Batter for the Vegan Corn Dogs you will need:

  • 1 c yellow cornmeal
  • 1 c flour
  • ½ t dry mustard
    Vegan Corn Dogs
Dry ingredients in the jar and shake to mix, remember to put the lid on before you shake. Yikes!
    Vegan Corn Dogs
Dip the dog in the batter – the jar works well
    Vegan Corn Dogs
Dipped and ready for the deep fryer
  • ½ t garlic powder
  • ½ t onion powder
  • ¼ to ½ t cayenne pepper (optional)
  • ¾ t salt
  • 2 egg substitutes – I use egg replacer for my eggs
  • 2 t baking powder
  • 1 c soy milk or other vegan friendly milk
  • 2 T maple syrup
  • ½ T melted shortening or margarine

How to make your Vegan Corn Dogs:

  1. The first thing you want to do is get your hot dogs prepped. Cut them part way through the middle to put some of the cheeses slices inside the hot dogs or sausages. The cheese of course is optional
  2. To keep the cheese in, put some toothpicks through the hot dogs to help hold it together

    You know what to do!
  3. Check your wooden skewers against the opening of the pot you are deep frying your corn dogs in. They will have to fit nicely inside the pot for deep frying, I had to cut about 4 inches off my skewers.
  4. Next carefully weave your wooden skewers though the hot dogs and cheese, with the toothpicks in there too. Do your best, its not gonna look that pretty. Try to keep the whole thing relatively straight for dipping in the batter. Put these aside while you heat your oil and make your batter.

Very scary working with hot oil!
  5. For the batter start with mixing up your egg replacer and getting everything out and ready to go
  6. Put all the dry ingredients in a tall jar, I used a quart sealer, and mix them up together
  7. Then mix all the wet ingredients, including your egg replacer and mix together
  8. Pour the wet into the dry and mix up till it is the consistency of thick pancake batter, it has to stick to the dogs!
  9. When your oil is good and hot, test with a bit of batter, should sizzle right away
  10. Take the hot dogs with the skewers and dip into the batter, let the excess drip off and slowly place into the oil, repeat, cook about 3-4 at one time
  11. Let brown nicely and turn to ensure all sides are cooked and golden.

Golden brown all around, drain in basket and then on a paper towel or tea towel
  12. When golden brown, take out carefully by raising the basket and let stay there for a couple minutes before transferring to a clean cotton towel to remove any additional excess oil. Remember they will be very hot inside, let them sit and cool down a few degrees before serving.
  13. Remind your guests to be careful, when taking that first bite.
  14. Serve with oven baked fries, homemade coleslaw, ketchup and home made dips. A mayo/mustard mixture is great and maybe a mayo/hot sauce combo. Plain ketchup and plain mustard are always going to be winners too. Use your imagination.
