In this Theory Lesson i will teach You what a slur is. Basicly its Breathing with a 'Slur' and Holding Your Breathe with a 'Tie.'
Meant to signify how a piece should be properly played in Music.

In this Excerpt from Piano Sonata no 1 by Beethoven, Bar 3 (Bar 33) has a 'slur,' it's meant to be played quickly by the player to resolve on the Ab on bar 37 then the slur is repeated resolving on bar 41 on the Ab below Middle C, these notes aren't meant to be held as it suggests, rather haphazardly broken up into little fragments as Professor Rieman says.

This is an example of a slur somewhat whimsically playing an inner melody.

It's quicker to learn a Bb Scale in the Right Hand learning this melody, as the slur on Bar 33 is meant to be played briskly.

In the whole piece theres slurs like the one described and held notes or tie on beat 3 of Bar 31 (Closing Theme) that are holding down a note while you play others in a sequence.

Learn the Sequence on Bar 33 to 41 and You will have a good technique learning the terminology.

Also holds in good stead for Learning Grade 8 Piano. All the best and Enjoy. ;-)
